Brief Description
Without Warning (also known as It Came Without Warning) is a 1980 American independent science fiction horror film directed and produced by Greydon Clark. The movie is notable for its "alien trophy hunter" premise, which heavily predates and influenced the 1987 sci-fi classic Predator, and for featuring early-career appearances by David Caruso and Kevin Peter Hall (who went on to play the Predator itself).
Plot:
The film centers on a towering extraterrestrial lifeform that has arrived on Earth to stalk, kill, and harvest humans as big-game trophies. Instead of advanced lasers, the alien utilizes a bizarre and terrifying organic weapon: flying, aggressive, jellyfish-like living discs. The alien hurls these creatures like Frisbees; upon hitting a target, they latch onto human prey, burrowing into the skin with needle-tipped tentacles and sucking out blood. The trouble begins when four teenagers—Sandy, Greg, Tom, and Beth—ignore the grim warnings of a local gas station owner and head into a remote mountain lake region for a camping trip. After Tom and Beth are killed and stashed away in an abandoned shack alongside other victims, the surviving pair (Sandy and Greg) flee back to a nearby truck stop to get help. The local townspeople are highly eccentric and generally unhelpful, drawing the teens into a double-sided nightmare.
The core battle against the alien relies on a small handful of individuals: Joe Taylor (Jack Palance): A grizzled, hard-nosed local gas-station attendant and tracker who knew something was lurking in the woods and secretly harbors the alien's organic weapons as trophies. Fred "Sarge" Dobbs (Martin Landau): A highly unstable, paranoid Vietnam veteran suffering from severe PTSD. While he is the only local who initially believes the teenagers, his escalating delusion makes him a dangerous loose cannon. Sandy (Tarah Nutter) & Greg (Christopher S. Nelson): The two surviving teens trying desperately to make it through the night. Despite its low budget, Without Warning features work from notable industry talent. It was shot by ace cinematographer Dean Cundey (famed for Halloween, The Thing, and Jurassic Park) and features creature makeup effects by Academy Award winner Greg Cannom (Bram Stoker's Dracula). It also marked the final film role for veteran actor Ralph Meeker.
