Brief Description  Island Claws (also known as Night of the Big Claw) is a 1980 B-movie creature feature directed by Hernan Cardenas. The film is a late entry in the "nature-gone-awry" eco-horror subgenre popular in the 1970s and early 1980s, heavily drawing inspiration from 1950s nuclear monster movies. The film had a budget of around $4 million, with an estimated $1 million of it spent entirely on building a life-sized, fully functional animatronic giant crab puppet. Despite the massive cost, the giant crab only appears in the final 10 minutes of the movie.

Plot:
The story takes place in a small, tight-knit fishing community on a remote island off the coast of Florida. Trouble begins when a nearby nuclear power plant accidentally leaks radioactive water into the surrounding ocean. At the same time, marine biologists at a local research facility are conducting growth-acceleration experiments on crabs, attempting to find a rapid solution to global food shortages. The combination of the biological experiments and the radioactive spill causes the local crustacean population to become highly aggressive. Thousands of normal-sized crabs begin swarming the town, culminating in the appearance of a massive, roaring, 12-foot-wide mutant giant crab that begins terrorizing the residents. A group of survivors—including a scientist, a photojournalist, and a local bar owner—must band together to survive the crustacean onslaught.
