Brief Description
City of the Living Dead (originally titled Paura nella città dei morti viventi) is a 1980 Italian supernatural splatter horror film directed by the legendary horror maestro Lucio Fulci. It is widely recognized as the first installment in Fulci’s unofficial "Gates of Hell" trilogy, which also includes The Beyond and The House by the Cemetery. Heavily inspired by the cosmic horror of H.P. Lovecraft, the movie is famous for its surreal, nightmare-like atmosphere and infamously graphic gore.
Plot:
The story kicks off when a Catholic priest, Father Thomas, commits suicide by hanging himself in a cemetery in the small, remote New England town of Dunwich. This unholy act fulfills an ancient prophecy from the Book of Enoch, effectively cracking open one of the seven gates of Hell and allowing the dead to rise. Simultaneously in New York City, a young psychic medium named Mary Woodhouse (Catriona MacColl) suffers a terrifying vision of this event during a séance. The vision is so overwhelming that she collapses and is mistakenly pronounced dead from fright. After she is buried, a persistent newspaper reporter named Peter Bell (Christopher George) investigates her grave, hears her screaming from inside the coffin, and rescues her with a pickaxe just in time.
Realizing the impending apocalypse, Mary and Peter team up and race toward Dunwich. They must find and seal the portal to Hell before All Saints' Day; otherwise, Satan's undead army will permanently overtake the Earth. Meanwhile, Dunwich descends into total chaos as the resurrected priest and a horde of teleporting, ultra-violent zombies terrorize the local residents. The film is legendary among horror fans for its jaw-dropping, practical special effects. Its two most infamous sequences include a young woman bleeding from her eyes and vomiting up her own internal organs, and an onslaught where the main characters are blasted by a massive storm of live maggots.
