Brief Description
Alien Dead (1980) is an American independent low-budget science fiction horror film written and directed by B-movie filmmaker Fred Olen Ray. Shot on a shoestring budget of just $12,000 in the swamps of Florida, it has since earned a mild cult status among fans of regional, "so-bad-it's-good" DIY cinema. It was filmed over a two-year period in Oviedo, Florida, using 16mm color film.
Plot:
The story takes place in a small Southern town near a swampy bayou. A meteorite strikes a houseboat filled with vacationing partiers, killing everyone on board. Due to the space radiation, the victims are resurrected as aquatic, flesh-eating zombies. Initially, the zombies lurk in the waters and eat the entire local alligator population. Once they completely run out of alligators, they venture into the town to hunt and feed on the local citizens. As people mysteriously vanish, an irascible local sheriff, a reporter, and a game warden team up to uncover the horrifying truth behind the swamp murders. The film is notable for featuring veteran serial icon Buster Crabbe (famous for playing Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers in the 1930s) as Sheriff Kowalski. It was one of the final film roles of his career, surrounded by a cast of mostly unknown local actors.
