Brief Description
Parts: The Clonus Horror (also known simply as The Clonus Horror) is a 1979 science fiction horror film directed by Robert S. Fiveson. The movie explores the ethical and moral implications of human cloning, famously serving as the basis for a successful copyright infringement lawsuit against the 2005 DreamWorks film The Island, which shared a strikingly identical plot. It gained further cult status after being featured on Mystery Science Theater 3000 in 1997.
Plot:
The story is set in a hermetically sealed, idyllic desert compound called Clonus. The community consists of physically perfect young adults who are heavily monitored, kept uneducated, and guided by a group of scientists and guards. The residents are brainwashed into believing that if they maintain peak physical fitness, they will eventually be chosen to graduate to "America"—a paradise of perfect peace. In reality, "America" is a lie. When clones are selected to leave, they are taken to a laboratory, sedated, placed in airtight plastic bags, and frozen in suspended animation. The facility is a secret, government-backed project funded by the global elite, who use the clones as living organ banks to extend their own lives.
The narrative follows a clone named Richard (Tim Donnelly), who begins to question his reality after finding an empty soda can in a river. Prompted by his love for a fellow clone named Lena (Paulette Breen), Richard scales the compound's walls and escapes into the outside world. Once outside, Richard discovers he is the clone of Richard Knight, the brother of corrupt presidential candidate Senator Jeffrey Knight (Peter Graves). With the help of a retired journalist named Jake Noble (Keenan Wynn), Richard tries to expose the conspiracy and return to rescue Lena. However, the powerful forces behind Clonus ruthlessly move to protect their secret, leading to a grim and tragic climax where the evidence is distributed to the media just as the conspiracy closes in.
