Brief Description
Phantasm (1979) is an independent American supernatural horror film written, directed, photographed, and edited by Don Coscarelli. Produced on a low budget of $300,000, it went on to become a box office hit and a beloved cult classic that spawned a five-film franchise. The movie is highly regarded for its dreamy, surreal atmosphere, synth score, and bizarre, nightmare-fueled logic.
Plot:
The story follows Mike Pearson, a 13-year-old orphan living in a small town with his older brother, Jody. After spying on a local funeral home, Mike discovers that the town's mysterious mortician—known only as the Tall Man—is operating a sinister, supernatural scheme. Mike witnesses the Tall Man effortlessly lifting a heavy coffin by himself and unearthing freshly buried corpses. Alongside his brother Jody and their family friend, an ice cream vendor named Reggie, Mike decides to actively investigate and stop the malevolent entity.
The Tall Man: Played by Angus Scrimm, he is a terrifying, towering antagonist who can shapeshift, survive extreme injuries, and bleed a distinct yellow fluid. The Silver Spheres: The Tall Man's signature flying, metallic weapons that lock onto victims and drill into their skulls to drain their blood. Dwarf Slaves: The main trio discovers that the Tall Man shrinks deceased human bodies down to half their size and reanimates them to work as slaves on his high-gravity alien home planet. The Dimensional Portal: Inside the marble corridors of Morningside Mortuary stands a giant tuning-fork-like mechanism that acts as a gateway between Earth and another world.
