Brief Description
Nosferatu the Vampyre (originally released as Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht) is a 1979 gothic horror masterpiece written, produced, and directed by acclaimed West German filmmaker Werner Herzog. The film is both a stylistic tribute to F.W. Murnau’s iconic 1922 silent film Nosferatu and a direct adaptation of Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula, utilizing the novel's original character names which had fallen into the public domain.
Plot:
Set in the 19th century, the story follows Jonathan Harker (Bruno Ganz), a real estate agent from the idyllic German town of Wismar. Despite terrifying premonitions from his pure-hearted wife, Lucy (Isabelle Adjani), Jonathan travels to the remote Carpathian Mountains in Transylvania to finalize a property sale with the mysterious Count Dracula (Klaus Kinski). Upon arriving at Dracula's gloomy castle, Jonathan encounters a strange, rodent-like figure with pale skin, sharp claws, and sunken eyes. After Dracula spots a miniature portrait of Lucy, he eagerly signs the real estate documents and slips away. Jonathan soon realizes he is trapped by a vampire and has been bitten. Dracula travels by sea in soil-filled coffins to Wismar, bringing with him a massive swarm of rats and the black plague. As Wismar is consumed by death and chaos, Lucy realizes that only a woman pure of heart can stay the vampire's hand and end his reign of terror.
