Brief Description
The Swarm (1978) is an American natural disaster-horror film directed and produced by Irwin Allen and loosely based on Arthur Herzog's 1974 novel of the same name. The film stars a massive all-star ensemble cast featuring Michael Caine as entomologist Dr. Bradford Crane, Richard Widmark as General Thaddeus Slater, and Katharine Ross as Captain Helena Anderson, alongside screen legends like Henry Fonda and Olivia de Havilland.
Plot:
A deadly and aggressive swarm of mutated African killer bees migrates northward from South America, attacking a military base in Texas and leaving thousands of people dead. Entomologist Dr. Bradford Crane clashes with military strategist General Thaddeus Slater over how to handle the crisis. While Slater wants to use aggressive military tactics that risk aggravating the environment, Crane races to find an antidote and a way to destroy the lethal insects. Escalating set pieces—including a catastrophic train derailment and an explosive nuclear reactor breach triggered by the bees—drive the chaotic finale. The film was a critical and commercial failure upon its theatrical release on July 14, 1978, and is frequently cited as a high-profile "master of disaster" misfire.
