Brief Description
The Manitou (1978) is a supernatural body-horror film about a woman who develops a rapidly growing tumor that turns out to be the reincarnation of an ancient, vengeful Native American medicine man. A bizarre and campy supernatural body-horror film directed by William Girdler and starring Tony Curtis, Susan Strasberg, and Michael Ansara.
Plot:
Karen Tandy (Susan Strasberg) goes to a hospital in San Francisco for a fast-growing lump on her neck. Doctors discover it is not a normal tumor, but an accelerated living human fetus. Karen's friend and former lover, Harry Erskine (Tony Curtis)—a fake tarot card reader—discovers the growth is actually Misquamacus, a malicious 400-year-old Native American shaman seeking rebirth to exact revenge on white invaders. Harry consults an occult expert (Stella Stevens) and hires a modern-day medicine man, John Singing Rock (Michael Ansara), to stop the demonic entity from fully manifesting. The movie shifts from grim body horror into surreal sci-fi absurdity during its climax. A topless Susan Strasberg floats in a hospital room that morphs into outer space, firing cosmic laser beams powered by the spirits of the hospital's mainframe computer to defeat the ancient demon.
