Brief Description
Dawn of the Dead (1978) is a landmark independent zombie horror film written, directed, and edited by George A. Romero. It is the second film in Romero’s influential Living Dead series, serving as a thematic sequel to Night of the Living Dead (1968).
Plot:
The film is set during a rapidly escalating, nationwide zombie apocalypse where the recently deceased reanimate and prey on human flesh. Amid mass hysteria and the collapse of civil society, survivors escaping the chaos of Philadelphia in a stolen television news helicopter. Seeking safe harbor, the group retreats to a massive, enclosed suburban shopping mall. They systematically clear out the remaining undead, barricade the entrances, and transform the mall into a luxurious sanctuary packed with material goods. However, their isolation is eventually shattered not only by the unrelenting hordes of zombies outside, but also by internal psychological fatigue and an invasion by a ruthless, marauding biker gang. The film is universally celebrated for its sharp social satire targeting American consumerism. By having the zombies instinctively flock to the shopping mall—simply because it was an influential place in their former lives—Romero draws a direct, humorous, and dark parallel between the mindless undead and modern consumer culture.
