Brief Description
The Devil’s Nightmare (1971)—originally titled La plus longue nuit du diable—is a Belgian-Italian Gothic horror film directed by Jean Brismée that blends supernatural damnation with psychological temptation. The movie follows a group of stranded tourists who find themselves trapped in an ancestral castle, where they are systematically executed by a succubus representing the Seven Deadly Sins.
Plot:
The film opens with a prologue set in 1945 during the fall of Berlin. Baron von Rhoneberg (Jean Servais), a former WWII general, is plagued by an ancient family curse: the firstborn daughter of every generation is destined to become a succubus in service to Satan. In an attempt to break this cycle, the Baron murders his own newborn daughter. However, unbeknownst to him, the housekeeper's daughter survives as the true firstborn, ensuring the demonic legacy endures. Decades later, a tour bus carrying seven distinct travelers takes a detour due to a road block and seeks shelter for the night at the isolated Rhoneberg castle. The travelers are a deliberate cross-section of human flaws, each embodying one of the Seven Deadly Sins.
Pride: An arrogant individual. Greed: A wealthy, money-obsessed figure. Lust: A highly promiscuous individual. Envy: A jealous and bitter traveler. Gluttony: The bus driver, who is constantly eating or reading about food. Wrath: A aggressively hostile atheist who spends the trip complaining. Sloth: A lazy, unbothered passenger. A mysterious, beautiful woman named Lisa Müller (Erika Blanc) arrives at the castle shortly after the tourists. She is quickly revealed to the audience as the succubus. Throughout the night, Lisa target-seduces and manipulates the guests, engineering horrific deaths tailored perfectly to their respective vices.
As the body count rises, a somber, unyielding priest among the tourists attempts to intervene. Lisa tries to corrupt and seduce him, but his strict faith allows him to resist her advances. Despite his spiritual resilience, he cannot stop the ultimate plan of Satan (Daniel Emilfork), who orchestrates the final downfall of the survivors. The film concludes with the remaining tourists fleeing the estate, only for their bus to plunge into a fatal crash. In the final chilling scene, the succubus smiles triumphantly at Satan, cementing the devil's absolute victory over the corrupted souls.
