Brief Description  Daughters of Darkness (1971)—originally titled Les Lèvres rouges (Blood on the Lips)—is a highly stylized, Belgian-directed erotic horror film that serves as a cornerstone of cult psychological Gothic cinema. Co-written and directed by Harry Kümel, the film stars French cinema legend Delphine Seyrig alongside John Karlen, Danielle Ouimet, and Andrea Rau. It is widely celebrated for blending '70s arthouse sophistication with grindhouse exploitation elements, reconstructing traditional vampire mythology through a lens of camp elegance, camp psychosexual tension, and striking visual design.

Plot:
Newlyweds Stefan (John Karlen) and Valerie (Danielle Ouimet) are traveling by train through Europe after eloping in Switzerland. A missed connection forces them to check into the cavernous, grand, and almost entirely deserted Grand Hotel des Thermes in the seaside resort town of Ostend, Belgium, during the stark off-season. The hotel concierge, Pierre, notes that they are the only guests. Meanwhile, local news reports detail a series of gruesome, unsolved murders of young women in nearby Bruges. Late at night, the glamorous and ageless Countess Elizabeth Báthory (Delphine Seyrig) arrives at the hotel accompanied by her beautiful, submissive young "secretary" and companion, Ilona Harczy (Andrea Rau). The concierge is deeply unnerved, privately swearing that he saw the exact same Countess at the hotel 40 years prior, looking entirely unchanged.

Stefan is an English aristocrat hiding dark secrets, including a streak of sadistic cruelty and an intensely toxic relationship with his wealthy, controlling mother. He repeatedly delays taking Valerie to England, keeping her trapped at the hotel. Sensing the fracture in the marriage, the Countess skillfully wedges herself between them, manipulating Stefan’s sadistic urges while slowly seducing the alienated, frightened Valerie. After Stefan accidentally kills Ilona during a violent encounter, the narrative unravels into direct horror. The Countess drops her aristocratic facade, revealing her true vampire nature to fully claim Valerie. Following Stefan's ultimate demise, Valerie falls entirely under Elizabeth's spell, replacing Ilona as her permanent companion. The cycle restarts as Valerie adopts the exact same glamorous, predatory poise of her new master.
