Brief Description  In the Year 2889 is a 1967 low-budget, post-apocalyptic science fiction film directed and produced by B-movie auteur Larry Buchanan. Despite its futuristic title—which was borrowed from an 1889 short story by Jules and Michel Verne—the movie is actually set in the near future (roughly 10 years after its release) and features distinct 1960s hair, clothing, and decor. The film was commissioned by American International Pictures (AIP) as a cheap, shot-for-shot color remake of Roger Corman’s 1955 black-and-white classic, The Day the World Ended.

Plot:
The story takes place in the immediate aftermath of a devastating global nuclear war that has wiped out billions of people. Captain John Ramsey, a fiercely prepared, curmudgeonly survivalist, anticipated the apocalypse. He built a fortified, isolated home in a deep Texas valley. The location is geographically unique: it is surrounded by cliffs rich in lead ore (blocking radiation), has an underground-heated lake that creates protective thermal updrafts, and has its own fresh water supply and power generator. Ramsey only hoarded three months' worth of rations for three people: himself, his daughter Joanna, and her fiancé, Larry. Larry never arrives, but five desperate strangers stumble onto the property begging for shelter. Reluctantly, Ramsey lets them in, immediately straining their limited food supply. As the group huddles inside, interpersonal drama, greed, and cabin fever rapidly spiral out of control. Meanwhile, outside the valley, the radioactive fallout is creating a terrifying new threat: a horde of mutated, telepathic, cannibalistic humans who begin stalking the perimeter of the house.
