Brief Description
Directed by Rafael Baledón, The Curse of the Crying Woman (La maldición de la llorona) is a 1961 Gothic horror film about a young woman named Amelia and her husband Jaime who visit her estranged aunt Selma at a remote, eerie country mansion. Selma is a black-magic witch plotting to use Amelia as a human vessel to resurrect their ancient, evil foremother—the legendary Crying Woman.
Plot:
The film opens in a foggy, ominous forest where a stagecoach is brutally attacked. A young woman, Amelia, and her new husband, Jaime, travel to a remote country mansion. Amelia has inherited the estate and is eager to reunite with her estranged aunt, Selma. Unbeknownst to the newlyweds, Aunt Selma is a powerful practitioner of black magic. She is the direct descendant of a terrifying witch who was murdered centuries ago—the original La Llorona. Selma keeps the rotting, speared corpse of La Llorona hidden deep within the mansion's subterranean vaults.
Selma reveals that she does not want the house for money; she wants Amelia. Amelia is the final bloodline descendant needed to fulfill a dark prophecy. Selma plans to use her niece as a physical vessel to resurrect the spirit of La Llorona, granting them absolute, terrifying cosmic power. As the film progresses, Selma uses psychological torment and dark magic to break Amelia's will. Amelia begins to suffer from a terrifying bloodlust, and her eyes occasionally turn pitch black as the curse takes hold. When Jaime realizes the horrific danger they are in, he tries to save his wife but is captured, tortured, and chained by Selma's henchman.
The ritual reaches its peak as a massive, ancient tower bell begins to ring 12 times. Amelia is forced into the dungeon to pull the spear out of La Llorona's corpse, which will fully awaken the monster. Jaime, though badly beaten, begs Amelia to fight the possession through the power of love. In a dramatic twist, Daniel escapes his chains in a fit of rage and seeks revenge. The struggle disrupts the ritual, causing the massive bell to break loose and crash down through the mansion. As the house violently disintegrates and collapses under the weight of the curse, the evil forces are crushed, allowing Amelia and Jaime to narrowly escape the crumbling ruins.
