Brief Description  War Gods of the Deep (also known as City Under the Sea) is a 1965 British-American science fiction adventure film directed by Jacques Tourneur. Set in 1903 off the coast of Cornwall, it follows a rescue mission into a hidden, domed Victorian city at the bottom of the ocean ruled by a tyrannical captain and mutated gill-men.

Plot:
Set around 1903 on the stormy Cornish coast of England, American mining engineer Ben Harris (Tab Hunter) discovers a dead body washed ashore and meets Jill Tregellis (Susan Hart), who has recently inherited a local cliffside estate. When an amphibious creature kidnaps Jill from the candlelit manor, Ben and eccentric artist Harold Tufnell-Jones (David Tomlinson)—accompanied by his pet rooster, Herbert—follow a secret subterranean passage through coastal caves down to a lost city beneath the ocean.

While marketed in the United States as part of an exploitation tie-in to the popular Roger Corman/Edgar Allan Poe cycle (loosely referencing Poe’s poem "The City in the Sea"), the film borrows much more heavily from the Jules Verne aesthetic of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The underground society faces imminent destruction from a restless, pulsating undersea volcano, setting up a desperate race for survival as the heroes attempt to escape back to the surface. Though widely considered campy due to its rubber-suited gill-men and slow-paced underwater sequences, it is valued by cult film fans for Tourneur’s moody atmospheric direction and Price's theatrical monologues.
