Brief Description
Terror-Creatures from the Grave (originally titled 5 tombe per un medium or Five Graves for a Medium) is a 1965 Italian black-and-white gothic horror film directed by Massimo Pupillo and starring horror icon Barbara Steele. Set in 1911, the plot follows a young attorney who travels to a remote villa to draft a will, only to discover the estate's owner died a year prior under suspicious circumstances.
Plot:
Attorney Albert Kovac answers a letter sent to his notary office from scientist and occultist Dr. Jeronimus Hauff, requesting a will. Upon arriving at the isolated villa, Albert meets Hauff’s widow, Cleo (Barbara Steele), and his daughter, Corinne. They shock him with the news that Hauff died nearly a year earlier after falling down a stone stairwell. The invitation letter bore Hauff’s official personal seal—an artifact that was buried alongside his corpse. Five specific individuals who witnessed Hauff's supposed accidental death signed his death certificate. As mysterious occurrences plague the mansion, these witnesses begin dying off one by one in gruesome and violent ways.
The castle is built upon an ancient plague burial site, and Hauff had spent his life dabbling in dark, forbidden occult experiments intended to reanimate or summon the souls of century-old plague victims. The film leans heavily into classic gothic aesthetics, featuring stormy nights, eerie interior decor (including mummified remains), creeping shadows, internal monologues, and a tense murder-mystery structure. As the grave of Jeronimus is exhumed and found empty, characters grapple with whether his spirit or resurrected plague zombies have returned from the dead to exact brutal revenge. The finale unveils a twist involving the loyal servant Kurt manipulating the corpse to fake the master's active supernatural return, culminating in a chilling blood-soaked resolution.
