Brief Description
Directed by Mario Bava, Planet of the Vampires (1965) is an atmospheric sci-fi horror film following the crews of two spaceships, the Argos and the Galot, who crash-land on a mysterious, fog-shrouded planet called Aura after following a distress signal. There, a disembodied alien intelligence reanimates the dead crew to hunt the living survivors.
Plot:
Responding to an unknown distress signal, the ships Argos and Galliot approach the uncharted planet Aura. An intense, anomalous gravitational force suddenly pulls them down to the surface. During the rough landing, the extreme gravitational shift causes temporary madness and violent amnesia among the crew members, who briefly turn on and attack one another before order is restored by Captain Mark Markary. Exploring the surface, the survivors locate the wrecked sister ship Galliot and discover that its crew died slaughtering each other. They bury the dead in makeshift graves.
The planet's native inhabitants are a near-extinct, non-corporeal alien race existing on a different vibratory plane. Unable to survive or leave without physical hosts, they manipulate the crew into killing each other. The buried astronauts rise from their graves as slow-moving, plastic-sheet-wrapped space zombies controlled by the alien intelligence to hunt down the remaining living crew. In a haunting centerpiece sequence, the explorers uncover the colossal skeleton remains of giant alien humanoids inside a derelict spacecraft—a direct visual precursor to the "Space Jockey" scene in Ridley Scott’s Alien.
