Brief Description
Nightmare Castle (1965), originally titled Amanti d'oltretomba, is an Italian gothic horror film directed by Mario Caiano and starring scream queen Barbara Steele in a dual role. The story centers on a sadistic scientist who brutally murders his unfaithful wife, only for supernatural vengeance and psychological terror to consume his household.
Plot:
Set in 19th-century Italy, the wealthy Muriel Arrowsmith (Barbara Steele) carries on an affair with the castle gardener, David (Rik Battaglia). Muriel's sadistic scientist husband, Dr. Stephen Arrowsmith (Paul Muller), aided by his elderly housekeeper and secret lover Solange (Helga Liné), discovers the betrayal. Stephen brutally chains, tortures, and kills the lovers in the castle dungeon. Before dying, Muriel taunts Stephen by revealing she changed her will to leave her entire fortune to her institutionalized, doe-eyed half-sister, Jenny (also played by Steele). Stephen also uses Muriel's blood in a macabre experiment to restore Solange's youth. Seeking the inheritance, Stephen marries the fragile Jenny and brings her to the castle. He and Solange execute a plot to drive her insane using gaslighting, auditory hallucinations of heartbeats, and bleeding flora. The tormented spirits of Muriel and David ultimately rise from the dead to exact a bloody supernatural revenge upon Stephen and Solange.
