Brief Description  Directed by Roger Corman and starring Vincent Price as Prince Prospero, The Masque of the Red Death (1964) is a gothic horror film based on Edgar Allan Poe’s 1842 short story. Set in medieval Italy, the plot follows a cruel, satanist prince who isolates himself in his fortified castle with decadent nobles to escape a sweeping red plague, only to find mortality inescapable during a masquerade ball.

Plot:
Prince Prospero captures local villagers—including a pious young woman named Francesca, her fiancé Gino, and her father Ludovico. Prospero brings them into his castle to break their spirits and force them to embrace his nihilistic, satanic worldview. While the plague decimates the outside world, Prospero hosts hedonistic revelry inside. His mistress, Juliana, practices witchcraft and attempts to win absolute dark power, while a subplot adapts Edgar Allan Poe's "Hop-Frog", featuring a tormented jester who plots a gruesome revenge against the abusive nobility.

The castle features a suite of distinct, vividly colored rooms culminating in a sinister black room with blood-red windows, mirroring Poe's original design for the fatal masquerade. Despite the sealed gates, a mysterious figure dressed in a striking red mask and robe infiltrates the masquerade ball. Prospero confronts the specter, only to realize that mortality cannot be cheated, leading to a chilling finale where death claims the corrupt elites. Directed by Roger Corman, the film is widely considered a high point of his Poe cycle due to its rich thematic depth regarding class cruelty and existential dread.
