Brief Description
Set in early 20th-century Europe, The Gorgon (1964) is a Gothic Hammer horror film directed by Terence Fisher. It follows the remote village of Vandorf, which is terrorized by Megaera—an ancient Gorgon living in Castle Borski who turns her victims to stone under the light of the full moon.
Plot:
Set in 1910 in the remote Central European village of Vandorf, the story follows a terrifying mystery where locals are mysteriously and literally turning to stone. When a young local artist and his pregnant girlfriend are attacked—resulting in the girl turning to stone and the artist dying by an alleged suicide—the community covers up the supernatural reality. Professor Jules Heitz arrives to clear his family's name, but he is soon killed by the spirit of Megaera, an immortal Gorgon from Greek mythology residing in the ruined Castle Borski. Jules's other son, Paul Heitz, and his mentor, Professor Karl Meister (Christopher Lee), arrive to uncover the truth. They discover that the local physician, Dr. Namaroff (Peter Cushing), has been protecting his assistant, Carla Hoffman (Barbara Shelley), who unconsciously transforms into the monstrous Gorgon during the full moon. The film ends in tragedy as the victims are petrified before Meister finally confronts the monster.
