Brief Description
Released in 1964 and directed by Vic Savage (under the alias A.J. Nelson), The Creeping Terror is an independent science fiction horror film widely regarded as one of the worst movies ever made. The plot follows a slow-moving, carpet-like alien creature that lands in a spacecraft near a small American town and consumes helpless citizens.
Plot:
The story follows a newlywed sheriff's deputy, Martin Gordon, and his wife Brett as they encounter a crashed alien spacecraft in rural Angel County, California. Out of the ship emerges a glacially slow, shambling extraterrestrial monster that looks suspiciously like a discarded shag carpet or fuzzy blanket draped over a wooden frame, featuring dangling rubber hoses and an cavernous front-facing mouth. The creature slowly consumes townsfolk—including picnickers, laundry-hanging housewives, and teenagers at a community dance—who inexplicably choose to stand completely still and walk directly into the monster's maw rather than outrun its sluggish pace.
Because much of the original on-set dialogue was unusable due to technical flaws, the filmmakers hired a radio announcer (Larry Burrell) to narrate over nearly the entire movie, describing actions and invented conversations in a monotone voice. The original, more elaborate monster prop was allegedly stolen by its creator right before principal photography, forcing the crew to cobble together a replacement out of a cheap carpet and padding. Due to a severe lack of actual plot material, long stretches of the runtime are filled with mundane "shoe leather" footage of characters driving, walking through rooms, or lingering at endless community dance sequences.
