Brief Description
Robinson Crusoe on Mars is a 1964 science fiction film directed by Byron Haskin. It stars Paul Mantee as Commander Christopher "Kit" Draper, Adam West as Colonel Dan McReady, and Victor Lundin as Friday. The 110-minute movie is a space-age retelling of Daniel Defoe's classic 1719 novel. Filmed on location in Death Valley, the story follows an astronaut stranded on a harsh alien world.
Plot:
Space Commander Christopher "Kit" Draper and Colonel Dan McReady orbit Mars when an asteroid forces them to eject into escape pods. Draper lands safely, but McReady dies in his crashed pod. Draper is left with a test monkey named Mona (played by a woolly monkey named Barney). He must figure out how to find air, water, and food. He learns he can break open certain surface rocks to release oxygen and create heat, while Mona finds underground water and edible plants.
After a long period of crushing loneliness, Draper sees alien spacecraft land on the planet. He encounters an alien slave who escapes from his captors. Draper names the man Friday, played by Victor Lundin. They overcome a language barrier, become close friends, and fight off alien attacks together. The movie was shot on location in California's Death Valley, using the barren and cracked terrain to mimic an alien world.
