Brief Description
The Damned (also released in the United States as These Are the Damned) is a 1963 British science fiction horror film directed by Joseph Losey and produced by Hammer Film Productions. Adapted from H.L. Lawrence's 1960 novel The Children of Light, the movie blends Cold War nuclear paranoia, juvenile delinquency, and a bleak, dystopian vision of the future.
Plot:
(Macdonald Carey), a middle-aged American tourist on a boating holiday in Dorset, England, is lured into an alley and brutally beaten by a leather-clad Teddy Boy motorcycle gang. The gang is led by the violent, controlling King (Oliver Reed), who uses his sister Joan (Shirley Anne Field) as bait to trap and rob tourists. Feeling remorseful, Joan sneaks away to join Simon on his boat. When King discovers this, he and his gang hunt the couple across the rugged coastal landscape. While fleeing the gang, Simon and Joan stumble onto a top-secret, highly guarded underground government bunker built into the seaside cliffs. Inside the facility, they discover nine strange, isolated children who are cold to the touch and educated via closed-circuit television.
Led by the chief scientist Bernard (Alexander Knox), the project reveals a chilling truth: the children were born naturally radioactive following a nuclear accident. They are completely immune to radiation and are being raised in total isolation to survive and repopulate the Earth after an "inevitable" atomic war. Simon and Joan try to help the children escape, triggering a violent confrontation with the military guards and the desperate gang. King is killed in a car crash while trying to flee with one of the boys. In the end, Simon and Joan attempt to escape by sea, but they succumb to radiation sickness from the children. Bernard ruthlessly executes his mistress Freya (Viveca Lindfors) when she opposes his cold-hearted plans, leaving the imprisoned children crying out for help as oblivious holidaymakers enjoy the beach above.
