Brief Description
Jason and the Argonauts (1963) is a classic fantasy-adventure film directed by Don Chaffey and legendary stop-motion animator Ray Harryhausen. Loosely based on the ancient Greek epic The Argonautica, it follows the hero Jason as he sails with a crew of elite Greek heroes on the ship Argo to find the magical Golden Fleece and reclaim his rightful throne.
Plot:
Pelias murders Jason's father to take the throne of Thessaly. Years later, Pelias tricks adult Jason into going on a deadly quest for the Golden Fleece, hoping Jason will not survive. Zeus and Hera watch mortals like pieces in a game. Hera protects Jason, but Zeus limits her help, allowing Jason to call on her name only five times. Jason gathers the finest heroes in Greece, including Hercules, to build the mighty ship Argo and sail to the far-off land of Colchis.
Legendary Monsters and Special Effects: Talos: A giant 100-foot bronze statue that comes to life on the Isle of Bronze and attacks the crew. The Harpies: Vulturous, bat-like winged creatures that torment the blind prophet Phineas until the Argonauts trap them. The Hydra: A deadly, seven-headed serpent guarding the Golden Fleece. The Skeleton Army: An iconic, breath-taking battle where Jason fights seven sword-wielding skeleton warriors that rise from the earth after dragon's teeth (or hydra's teeth) are planted. Ray Harryhausen spent four months frame-by-frame animating this legendary sequence.
