Brief Description
Terror in the Crypt (released in Italy as La cripta e l'incubo and also known as Crypt of the Vampire) is a 1964 Gothic horror film directed by Camillo Mastrocinque and starring Christopher Lee as Count Ludwig Karnstein. Loosely based on Sheridan Le Fanu’s classic 1872 vampire novella Carmilla, the movie blends moody European atmosphere with classic themes of ancestral curses and supernatural possession.
Plot:
In the gloomy, isolated Karnstein castle, Count Ludwig Karnstein (Christopher Lee) lives with his delicate daughter, Laura (Adriana Ambesi). Laura is tormented by terrifying, vivid nightmares and sleepwalking visions. Centuries prior, an executed ancestor/witch from the Karnstein lineage laid a dying curse on the family, vowing that one of her descendants would manifest her face and exact bloody vengeance from beyond the grave. Fearing that Laura is the reincarnation or vessel of this evil witch, Count Ludwig summons a young researcher/scholar named Klauss (or Friedrich) to investigate the connection between the girl's dreams and a sequence of bizarre, blood-drained local murders.
Count Ludwig shifts between desperate protection and profound dread as people close to the household—including a storyteller, a maid, and a nurse—turn up dead. After a carriage accident outside the castle, a mysterious young woman named Lyuba (or Leuba) stays at the manor. A strong, intense bond forms between Laura and Lyuba, carrying distinct subtext that echoes the classic lesbian undertones of Le Fanu’s original Carmilla source material. As murders escalate and research uncovers the truth of the haunting, the characters must confront whether the ancient vampire-witch has truly returned to destroy the remaining Karnsteins.
