Brief Description
Dungeon of Harrow (1962)—also known as Dungeons of Horror—is an ultra-low-budget, gothic horror film directed by comic book artist Pat Boyette. Filmed in San Antonio, Texas, it is highly regarded by cult film enthusiasts for its over-the-top melodrama, surprisingly gory elements for its era, and famously cheap special effects (including an opening shipwreck sequence filmed using a toy boat in a bathtub).
Plot:
Set in the 1870s, the story follows Aaron Fallon (Russ Harvey), a wealthy but weak-willed protagonist who survives a catastrophic shipwreck alongside his ship's captain. Stranded on a seemingly deserted, remote island, they find a crumbling, waterfront castle owned by the sadistic and mentally unhinged Count Lorente de Sade (William McNulty). Instead of offering safe harbor, the Count takes the survivors prisoner. He accuses the captain of being a pirate and subjects him to brutal torture.
The castle harbors a bizarre assortment of residents, including a mute whipping girl named Ann, a sinister manservant named Mantis, and a resident nurse named Cassandra. Fallon discovers that the Count keeps his supposedly leprous wife locked away in a hidden dungeon below the castle. As the Count's sanity completely unravels—tormented by hallucinations of spirits, giant bats, and spiders—he turns the island into a hunting ground, forcing Fallon and Cassandra into a deadly game of survival.
