Brief Description  Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1961) is a classic American science fiction disaster film produced, directed, and co-written by Irwin Allen. Distributed by 20th Century Fox, the movie follows a high-stakes mission to save Earth from global annihilation. Its widespread commercial success paved the way for Allen's long-running 1960s television series of the same name.

Plot:
During a routine scientific expedition in the Arctic Ocean, the crew of the newly designed nuclear submarine, the USOS Seaview, suddenly loses radio contact. Upon surfacing, they discover that a meteor shower has ignited the Van Allen radiation belt in outer space. The sky is literally on fire, causing global temperatures to skyrocket. Scientists estimate that humanity has only three weeks to live before the planet becomes unlivable. The Seaview's creator, retired Admiral Harriman Nelson, devises a dangerous, calculations-backed plan. He intends to fire a nuclear missile from the Mariana Trench into the radiation belt to blow it out like a candle.

When the United Nations rejects his plan as too risky, Nelson defies global authorities. He steals away with the Seaview to race against time and execute the launch. The film is celebrated for introducing the iconic, glass-nosed USOS Seaview submarine. Irwin Allen heavily utilized vibrant De Luxe Color and CinemaScope wide-angle lenses to emphasize the scale of the underwater exploration. While critics frequently point out the film's highly inaccurate, pseudo-scientific logic, it remains a beloved staple of 1960s pop-culture sci-fi.
