Brief Description
Trog (1970) is a British science fiction horror film that is famously recognized as the final feature film appearance of Hollywood icon Joan Crawford. Directed by Freddie Francis and produced by Herman Cohen, the movie has earned a reputation as a B-movie cult camp classic.
Plot:
The movie opens in the English countryside where three young spelunkers (potholers) explore an unmapped cave system. Deep within the cavern, they encounter a hostile, primitive ape-like creature. The creature attacks, beating one of the explorers to death and leaving the second severely traumatized and in a state of shock. The third explorer, Malcolm, seeks help from the nearby Brockton Institute, a research facility run by prominent anthropologist Dr. Emily Brockton (Joan Crawford). Intrigued by the account, Dr. Brockton spearheads an expedition back into the caves alongside the local police. They locate the creature, and under the glare of a live television broadcast crew, Dr. Brockton subdues it using a tranquilizer hypodermic gun.
Dr. Brockton brings the creature to her institute for containment and study, nicknaming him "Trog" (short for troglodyte, or Ice Age caveman). She believes he is the missing link in human evolution. Using patient conditioning, classical music, toys, and experimental surgery to augment his vocal cords, Dr. Brockton successfully domesticates Trog. He begins to understand basic commands and even learns to speak a few primitive words. However, her research faces fierce opposition from Sam Murdock (Michael Gough), a local real estate developer and conservative town citizen. Murdock views Trog as a dangerous monster and an obstruction to local commercial growth. He takes Dr. Brockton to court to legally demand Trog's extermination, but the magistrate rules in favor of the scientist.
Infuriated by the legal loss, Murdock breaks into the Brockton Institute at night to free Trog, hoping to provoke the beast so the authorities will be forced to kill it. His plan backfires immediately; upon being released, a panicked Trog beats Murdock to death. Trog runs amok through the local village, instigating a violent rampage. He attacks local citizens, throws a merchant through a store window, and eventually abducts a little girl from a playground. Trog retreats back to his home cave with the child. The military and police launch a massive manhunt and surround the cave. Dr. Brockton bravely enters the cave alone to negotiate. She successfully coaxes Trog into safely releasing the little girl. Despite Brockton's desperate pleas to spare the creature's life for science, the military closes in and kills Trog, ending the evolutionary discovery.
