Brief Description
Valley of the Dragons is a 1961 low-budget black-and-white science fiction adventure film directed by Edward Bernds. Loosely based on Jules Verne’s 1877 novel Off on a Comet (Hector Servadac), the 79-minute movie relies heavily on recycled stock footage from older fantasy films like One Million B.C. and Rodan.
Plot:
The story opens in Algeria in the year 1881. Two men—Captain Hector Servadac, a suave French officer, and Michael Denning, an Irish soldier of fortune—are preparing to fight a duel over the affections of a woman. Just as they are about to square off, a mysterious comet grazes the Earth's atmosphere at a low altitude, triggering catastrophic earthquakes and violent winds. When the two rivals regain consciousness, they find themselves in a bizarre, prehistoric alien jungle. They realize that the comet's impact tore away a fragment of the Earth—complete with its atmosphere, ancient wildlife, and early human ancestors—trapping it in a new orbit.
Forced to set aside their differences to survive, they learn that the comet will not return to cross paths with Earth for another seven years. During their exploration, the men split up and are taken in by two rival prehistoric tribes: Hector is rescued by Deena, a beautiful cavewoman from the Shell Tribe (a more peaceful, underground-dwelling group). Michael is taken in by Nateeta and the aggressive, cave-dwelling Rock Tribe. Hector introduces modern concepts like gunpowder to the primitives. Eventually, the two tribes must overcome their hostility and unite to survive a dual threat: a devastating volcanic eruption and a massive onslaught of giant, predatory prehistoric creatures.
