Brief Description
The Vampire Lovers (1970) is a landmark British Gothic horror film directed by Roy Ward Baker and produced by the legendary Hammer Film Productions in co-production with American International Pictures. Famously based on J. Sheridan Le Fanu’s classic 1872 novella Carmilla, it is renowned as the first installment in Hammer's "Karnstein Trilogy" and stands out historically for its daring, explicit depiction of lesbian vampirism and erotic themes.
Plot:
Set in Styria, Baron Joachim von Hartog seeks vengeance for his sister's death by hunting the local vampire clan. He manages to decapitate a beautiful vampire, but the final resting place of the matriarch, Mircalla Karnstein, eludes him. Decades later, a mysterious Countess introduces her beautiful daughter, "Marcilla" (an anagram of Mircalla, played by Ingrid Pitt), to General von Spielsdorf. Under the guise of a temporary houseguest, Marcilla seduces the General's daughter, Laura. Laura soon suffers from debilitating nightmares and a sudden, draining illness, eventually dying with puncture wounds on her chest. Marcilla vanishes immediately after. Reappearing under the alias "Carmilla" after a staged carriage accident, the vampire embeds herself within the household of Roger Morton.
She quickly targets Morton’s daughter, Emma, while simultaneously utilizing her supernatural influence to manipulate and control the household governess, Mademoiselle Perrodot. : As Emma grows critically weak, a local physician begins investigating the pattern of deaths. Realizing his plans are being jeopardized, Carmilla brutally kills the doctor. Concurrently, General von Spielsdorf joins forces with Baron Hartog and Roger Morton to hunt the beast. They track Carmilla back to the ruins of the Karnstein castle. The General successfully decapitates the sleeping vampire in her tomb, permanently destroying the curse.
