Brief Description
The Invisible Dead (1970) is a Gothic Euro-horror science-fiction film directed by Pierre Chevalier, also widely released under alternative titles such as Orloff and the Invisible Man, Orloff and the Invisible Monster, and Secret Love Life of the Invisible Man. This Franco-Spanish co-production leans heavily into low-budget exploitation film tropes, combining Gothic atmosphere, sci-fi mad scientist motifs, and explicit elements.
Plot:
The narrative begins with a young physician, Dr. Garondet, answering a medical emergency summon at the remote and ominous Castle Orloff. Local villagers, terrified of the castle and its owner, refuse to aid him or provide a carriage. Persisting alone, Dr. Garondet arrives at the ancestral estate and meets the eccentric Professor Orloff. Orloff claims his beautiful daughter, Cécile, is hopelessly mad due to a traumatic past event. However, Cécile secretly approaches the doctor, claiming her father is the one who has lost his mind.
As Dr. Garondet spends the night trapped in the castle, the dark truth unravels: Professor Orloff has conducted bizarre experiments to create an invisible, murderous, blood-thirsty ape-man intended to "dominate the Earth". Years prior, Cécile was mistakenly pronounced dead, and upon waking up in her coffin, was attacked and stabbed by graverobbing servants—an event her father used to cover up his own madness. The invisible monster subsequently breaks free from its cell, taking Cécile hostage and forcing Dr. Garondet into a lethal game of survival to rescue her.
