Brief Description
The Valley of Gwangi (1969) is an American fantasy Western film directed by Jim O'Connolly and written by William Bast that seamlessly mashes together elements of traditional Spaghetti Westerns and prehistoric creature features. The film is celebrated as a cult classic primarily because of its stop-motion special effects crafted by master animator Ray Harryhausen, marking it as his final dinosaur-themed project.
Plot:
Set in Mexico at the turn of the 20th century, a struggling Wild West show run by T.J. Breckenridge acquires a minuscule prehistoric horse called "El Diablo" (an Eohippus). Her ex-lover, Tuck Kirby, intends to buy the horse for a rival show. Local Romani group members, believing the horse carries a curse, steal El Diablo to return it to its source. T.J., Tuck, and an ambitious paleontologist named Professor Bromley pursue them into a desolate canyon known as the Forbidden Valley. Inside the valley, the group discovers an ecosystem frozen in time. They battle various prehistoric monsters, including a flying Pteranodon, an Ornithomimus, and a defensive Styracosaurus. The region is ruled by a massive, aggressive Allosaurus named Gwangi.
In the film’s iconic center-piece sequence, the cowboys use their roping skills to lasso Gwangi. After a rockslide knocks the beast unconscious, they cage him and transport him back to civilization to serve as T.J.'s star attraction. On opening night, a saboteur releases the apex predator. Gwangi wreaks total havoc on the town, killing multiple citizens and fighting an elephant. Tuck eventually corners the monster inside a cathedral, where a massive fire breaks out, trapping and destroying the creature. The concept originated in 1942 with Willis O'Brien, the stop-motion legend behind King Kong (1933). O'Brien passed away in 1962 before realizing the project. Decades later, his protégé Ray Harryhausen bought the rights to complete his mentor's dream.
