Brief Description
The Astro-Zombies (initially released in May 1968 but often associated with its 1969 theatrical run) is a legendary ultra-low-budget, Grade-Z science fiction horror film. It was written, directed, and produced by cult exploitation filmmaker Ted V. Mikels. The movie is famous for its chaotic blending of mad scientist tropes, Cold War spy thrillers, and campy horror elements.
Plot:
The story follows Dr. DeMarco (John Carradine), a disgruntled and eccentric scientist who was fired from the government's Astro Space Laboratory. Bitter and unhinged, he retreats to a hidden laboratory inside a secluded city mansion. Alongside his mute, deformed assistant Franchot (William Bagdad), DeMarco begins complex experiments on reanimating human tissue. His ultimate goal is to create the "Astroman"—an advanced cybernetic superhuman built from the corpse of an executed criminal and infused with synthetic blood. The creature relies on a solar-powered artificial heart and radio-controlled brain implants. However, the initial creature's brain is defective.
The "Astro-Zombie" breaks free from DeMarco's control. Driven by primal instincts, it embarks on a brutal killing spree across the city, targeting young women and ripping out their vital organs. DeMarco needs these organs to continue his work on a second, "morally pure" Astroman. The wave of gruesome murders attracts two major rival factions: The CIA: Led by Chief Holman (Wendell Corey), government agents suspect DeMarco is behind the killings. They plant a female lab technician as bait to lure out the monster. International Spies: A ruthless gang of foreign communist spies, led by the seductive and deadly Satana (Tura Satana), tracks DeMarco using a tracking device. They want to steal his research data and control tape to build an army of solar-powered cyber-soldiers.
The plot lines converge at DeMarco's hidden mansion. The CIA forces surround the perimeter just as Satana and her henchmen breach the laboratory. Chaos breaks out inside as the Astro-Zombies turn on everyone indiscriminately. In the frenzy, Satana shoots and mortally wounds Dr. DeMarco. Before dying, DeMarco manages to pull a master self-destruct switch. The laboratory explodes, killing the spies, the creatures, and destroying all evidence of his work. They do not look like traditional zombies. They are men wearing generic rubber Halloween masks, business shirts, and solar cells taped to their foreheads. They are completely dependent on sunlight or overhead lights to function.
