Brief Description
Brides of Blood (1968), also known as The Brides of Blood Island, is a cult-classic Filipino horror film co-directed by legendary exploitation filmmakers Gerardo de Leon and Eddie Romero. Shot in the Philippines and distributed by Hemisphere Pictures, it is the official first installment of the famous "Blood Island" trilogy, which became a massive staple of American drive-in and grindhouse cinema. The film famously blends 1950s atomic-mutation sci-fi with late-1960s graphic violence, nudity, and bizarre psychodrama.
Plot:
The story begins as a steamship arrives at a remote tropical territory known to locals as "Blood Island." Three Americans disembark on a fact-finding mission. Upon arrival, the trio is immediately unsettled when they witness the locals dealing with the gruesome aftermath of a mutation attack—specifically, the severed limbs of a young village girl. The village chief, Arcadio, tries to brush it off as an accident, but the island is clearly gripped by terror. The Americans accept lodging at the island estate of Esteban Powers (Mario Montenegro), a handsome but strange, wealthy landowner who suffers from severe, debilitating migraine headaches and is accompanied by a menacing dwarf servant named Goro.
As Dr. Henderson begins his research, the group encounters the horrifying reality of nuclear fallout. The island's ecology has turned predatory, featuring man-eating trees, tentacled banana plants, giant ferocious cockroaches, and killer butterflies. Worse yet, the native villagers have resorted to a grim ritual: to appease a hulking, disfigured humanoid monster that ravages the jungle, they perform regular virgin sacrifices, tying young women to bamboo altars to be claimed as the monster's "brides". Human drama escalates alongside the monster mayhem. Carla, desperate for intimacy and bored by her husband, tries to seduce Jim, but Jim is instead drawn to a beautiful native girl named Alma (Eva Darren). When Alma is chosen by the village elders to be the monster's next sacrificial bride, Jim steps in t
Carla, driven by her own erratic impulses and strange desires, wanders into the jungle and comes face-to-face with the monster. In a grotesque turn of events, it is revealed that Esteban Powers is actually the monster. His agonizing "migraines" are actually the painful onset of a radioactive transformation that morphs him into the rampaging blood-beast. The monster brutally kills and dismembers Carla. When Dr. Paul Henderson attempts to intervene, he is also killed by the creature. Having lost the two scientists, Jim and Alma rally the terrified native villagers. Armed with torches and weapons, the collective group tracks the transformed Esteban into the jungle, ultimately overpowering and destroying the mutant beast once and for all."
