Brief Description
The Alligator People (1959) is a 20th Century Fox science-fiction horror film directed by Roy Del Ruth, starring Beverly Garland, Richard Crane, and Lon Chaney Jr. Framed as a hypnotic flashback, the story follows Jane Marvin as she recounts her past life as Joyce Webster, a woman who embarks on a desperate search for her husband, Paul, after he mysteriously vanishes on their honeymoon.
Plot:
The movie opens at the Webley Sanatorium. Two doctors put a seemingly well-adjusted nurse named Jane Marvin under therapeutic hypnosis. Under hypnosis, Jane reveals her real name is Joyce Webster and she recounts a blocked, horrific memory from her past. Joyce's story flashes back to her wedding day to war veteran Paul Webster. While sitting on a train for their honeymoon, Paul receives a frantic telegram. He steps off at a station to make a phone call, and the train pulls away without him, leaving Joyce abandoned. After years of searching, Joyce tracks Paul's origins down to the Hawthorne plantation, a secluded estate deep in the Louisiana swamps.
Upon arrival, she is met with cold hostility by the plantation owner, Mrs. Lavinia Hawthorne, who claims she has never heard of Paul. Joyce also encounters Manon, a drunken, alligator-hating Cajun handyman who has a hook for a hand after losing it to an alligator. Joyce refuses to leave and eventually discovers Paul is hidden on the property. Following a near-fatal plane crash during the war, Paul had been treated by a brilliant scientist, Dr. Mark Sinclair. Sinclair used an experimental serum derived from alligators to successfully regenerate Paul's mangled limbs.
The miracle cure had a horrific side effect—it began permanently mutating the patients' DNA. Paul abandoned Joyce because his skin was actively turning into scaly alligator hide. Dr. Sinclair attempts a high-stakes, experimental cure using cobalt rays to reverse the mutation. However, the bitter handyman Manon sabotages the machine during the procedure. The machine malfunctions, accelerating Paul's mutation and transforming him into a complete, bipedal Alligator Person. Paul kills Manon in a struggle, runs blindly into the deadly swamp, and sinks into quicksand to his death. Back in the present, Joyce wakes from her hypnotic state with no conscious memory of the trauma, leaving the doctors to ponder the terrifying truth of her story.
