Brief Description  20 Million Miles to Earth is a seminal 1957 American science-fiction monster film directed by Nathan Juran and featuring iconic stop-motion animation by special effects master Ray Harryhausen. Produced by Charles H. Schneer's Morningside Productions for Columbia Pictures, the film is celebrated for its sympathetic monster, known colloquially as the Ymir, and its vivid Italian setting.

Plot:
The first manned U.S. spacecraft to Venus crashes into the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Sicily. Local fishermen rescue two surviving astronauts, including mission commander Colonel Robert Calder. A young Italian boy named Pepe salvages a sealed canister from the wreckage. Inside is a strange, gelatinous mass containing an alien egg. Pepe sells the mass to Dr. Leonardo, a zoologist traveling with his medical-student granddaughter, Marisa. : The egg hatches into a small, upright reptilian creature. Unbeknownst to the scientists, the Earth's atmosphere causes the Venusian creature to double in size every 24 hours.

As the creature grows, it becomes too large for its cage, escapes into the Sicilian countryside, and begins seeking out its primary food source: sulfur. Though not inherently aggressive, it lashes out when provoked by terrified locals and dogs. Colonel Calder tracks the beast down and helps capture it using an electrical grid. The military relocates the creature to the Rome Zoo for study. An equipment failure cuts the sedation lines, causing the now-colossal Ymir to break free, battle a zoo elephant, and rampage through Rome. The Italian military corners the tragic, misunderstood creature atop the historic Colosseum, where it is ultimately destroyed by heavy artillery fire.
