Plot:
Having survived the events of Revenge of the Creature, the Gill-man hides in the Florida Everglades. The wealthy, paranoid Dr. William Barton finances an expedition to capture him. Tensions boil on the ship as Barton subjects his wife, Marcia, to relentless psychological abuse and accusations of infidelity, while their guide, Jed Grant, aggressively hits on her. The team hunts down the Gill-man in the swamps. During a chaotic struggle, the Creature is accidentally doused in gasoline and severely burned.

Desperate to save the specimen, Dr. Barton and Dr. Morgan operate. They discover the outer gills are destroyed, but the Creature has a hidden, dormant set of lungs underneath. They surgically strip away his charred, scaled hide, revealing a smoother, blockier skin underneath, and alter him to breathe air. He is also fitted with human clothes. The altered Gill-man is brought to Barton’s private ranch in California. Stripped of his ability to swim or return to the water, the lumbering, humanoid Creature is kept in an enclosure. Dr. Morgan argues that the Creature will adapt peacefully if treated with kindness, but Barton treats him like a dangerous prisoner.

Barton's jealousy hits a breaking point when he catches Jed Grant trying to force himself on Marcia. In a fit of rage, Barton beats Jed to death. To cover up his crime, Barton throws Jed’s body into the Creature’s enclosure, framing the Gill-man for the murder. Recognizing the frame-up, the enraged Gill-man breaks out of his cage, storms the house, and kills Dr. Barton. Instead of executing a blind killing spree through society, the sad, disfigured Creature escapes to the coast. The film ends on a haunting note, with the Gill-man standing at the shoreline, staring longingly into the deep ocean water that he can no longer survive in.
