Written by Jimmy Sangster as his first feature screenplay, the movie served as a cornerstone in Hammer Studios' transition from low-budget B-movies to legendary sci-fi and Gothic horror. Originally conceived as a sequel to The Quatermass Xperiment (1955), it was re-engineered into a standalone story after character rights were denied by creator Nigel Kneale.

Plot:
The film is set in a bleak, wintery rural Scotland during military training exercises. An explosion shakes a remote marshland quarry, opening an apparently bottomless volcanic fissure. One soldier is killed instantly, and another suffers severe, unexplainable radiation burns. Dr. Adam Royston, an American atomic energy scientist working at a nearby research station, is brought in alongside Inspector McGill. They discover high levels of localized radioactivity emanating from the crack.

An unseen, primeval, sludge-like creature emerges from the Earth's core. It seeks out nuclear energy sources to feed its massive growth. Over successive nights, the creature creeps across the countryside, terrorizing a local village, ransacking Royston's lab, and completely consuming a hospital’s radiotherapy equipment—leaving dissolved, radiated bodies in its wake. After standard military weaponry completely fails against the creature, Dr. Royston deploys his experimental "cobalt project"—a device capable of projecting neutralizing, destructive radio waves—to successfully destabilize and dissolve the radioactive mass.
