Brief Description  Forbidden Planet is a 1956 science fiction film directed by Fred McLeod Wilcox and loosely based on William Shakespeare's The Tempest. Set on the distant planet Altair IV in the 23rd century, it follows a starship crew investigating a lost scientific expedition, uncovering an ancient subterranean machine driven by the destructive subconscious power of the mind.

Plot:
The Mission: In the 23rd century, the United Planets Starship C-57D, commanded by John J. Adams (Leslie Nielsen), arrives at the green-skied world of Altair IV. Their objective is to investigate the fate of the Bellerophon, an expedition ship that vanished 20 years prior.

The Survivors: Upon arrival, they are warned away by Dr. Edward Morbius (Walter Pidgeon), who claims to be the sole survivor. Disregarding the warning, the crew lands and discovers Morbius living in a high-tech oasis with his beautiful daughter Altaira (Anne Francis) and an extraordinarily advanced, highly articulate servant named Robby the Robot.

The Krell Secret: Morbius reveals that a mysterious, invisible entity slaughtered the rest of the original crew. He shows Adams the planet's true secret: the subterranean ruins of the Krell, an ultra-advanced alien race that vanished overnight 200,000 years ago. Morbius has used a Krell "brain booster" device to double his own intellect, allowing him to decipher their technology.

The Monster from the Id: As Captain Adams and Altaira fall in love, the invisible, energy-based entity returns, breaching the starship's defensive perimeters and killing crew members. Doc Ostrow (Warren Stevens) secretly uses the Krell brain booster; before dying from the strain, he uncovers the terrifying truth: the monster is a projection of Morbius’s subconscious mind. The massive Krell underground machinery, designed to materialize thought into reality, has accidentally given physical form to Morbius's hidden, primitive rage ("Monsters from the Id").

The Climax: Confronted by Adams with his own subconscious guilt, Morbius accepts the truth. As the unstoppable beast melts through the laboratory doors, Morbius disowns the monster and suffers a fatal stroke. With his final breaths, he triggers a self-destruct mechanism for the Krell planet. Adams, Altaira, and Robby escape aboard the C-57D just before Altair IV explodes.
