Brief Description  Released on April 26, 1956, The Creature Walks Among Us is a 78-minute black-and-white science fiction horror film directed by John Sherwood. It is the third and final installment in Universal Pictures' Creature from the Black Lagoon trilogy, following Revenge of the Creature. The film transitions the classic monster movie format into a tragic, psychological narrative driven by human instability.

Plot:
The wealthy but deeply paranoid scientist Dr. William Barton organizes an expedition to the Florida Everglades. His team includes the more compassionate geneticist Dr. Thomas Morgan, along with secondary scientists and a ruthless guide named Jed Grant. Barton’s wife, Marcia, also tags along, quickly becoming the focal point of her husband's obsessive jealousy. They successfully locate the Gill-Man, but a chaotic capture sequence leaves the monster severely burned by gasoline.

To save the Creature's life, the scientists perform emergency surgery. They discover that underneath his external fish gills lies a dormant, primitive set of human-like lungs. Due to the severe structural damage to his outer skin and gills, the team removes his scaling, revealing a smoother, thick epidermis. The surgery leaves the Gill-Man permanently transformed into an air-breathing humanoid. He is outfitted in a specialized canvas suit to protect his sensitive new skin.

The scientists transport the Creature to Dr. Barton's secluded California ranch. Kept in an enclosed compound, Dr. Morgan attempts to civilize the beast, arguing that the monster only mirrors the emotional violence of those around him. Meanwhile, human tensions boil over. Jed Grant continuously harasses Marcia Barton. Spotting this, the unstable Dr. Barton suffers a psychological breakdown. In a fit of jealous rage, Barton murders Jed Grant and tries to frame the captive Creature for the crime.

The Gill-Man witnesses the murder, and the injustice triggers his survival instincts. Breaking free from his enclosure, he kills the tyrannical Dr. Barton in retaliation. Instead of continuing a violent rampage against humanity, the melancholy monster moves past the surviving scientists and wanders toward the ocean shore. The film closes on a tragic note, as the mutated Gill-Man stares longingly at the sea, unable to return to his aquatic home because he can no longer breathe underwater.
