Brief Description  Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) is a landmark Universal Pictures horror and science-fiction film directed by Jack Arnold. Shot in innovative black-and-white 3D, it introduces the Gill-man, the final entry into the pantheon of classic Universal Monsters. The story departs from the gothic, supernatural castles of earlier cinema, trading them for a mid-century, sci-fi fueled expedition into the deep, primordial corners of nature.

Plot:
In the upper Amazon basin, geologist Dr. Carl Maia unearths a fossilized, webbed skeletal hand from the Devonian period. Dr. Maia teams up with ichthyologist Dr. David Reed, David's fiancée Kay Lawrence, and financier Mark Williams. They charter a tramp steamer named the Rita to search for the rest of the skeleton. Finding nothing at the initial dig site, they travel downriver to the "Black Lagoon"—a paradise from which no one has ever returned alive. The crew is unaware that a living, prehistoric Gill-man populates the lagoon.

The creature watches the scientists and becomes deeply infatuated with Kay, mirroring her underwater movements during a famous swimming sequence. The crew traps the Gill-man using a fish narcotic, but he escapes, brutally killing several crew members. Mark views the beast as a trophy and tries to hunt it, while David wants to study it humanely. The Gill-man eventually kills Mark. The beast blocks the lagoon's exit with logs to trap the ship, then kidnaps Kay and drags her into his underground cavern lair. David and the surviving crew track them down, riddle the Gill-man with bullets, and watch him sink into the dark waters of the lagoon.

The Gill-man is described as a "living fossil" from the Devonian age, a time when giant amphibians ruled the earth. He represents a missing link in human-amphibian evolution. He possesses both highly functional gills along his neck and an internal lung structure, allowing him to breathe both underwater and on land. Standing roughly 6.5 feet tall, the humanoid creature features heavily webbed hands and feet, long predatory claws, and a thick, scaly hide resistant to superficial punctures. The monster possesses superhuman strength, an accelerated healing factor when submerged in native waters, and exceptional underwater swimming speed.
