Plot:
The Awakening (1921): A British archaeological expedition led by Sir Joseph Whemple discovers an un-embalmed mummy in Egypt. The remains belong to Imhotep, a high priest buried alive 3,700 years prior for attempting to use the magical Scroll of Thoth to resurrect his dead lover, Princess Anck-es-en-Amon. While the senior scientists argue, a young assistant named Ralph Norton reads the scroll aloud. Imhotep twitches to life, steals the scroll, and escapes, driving Norton into fits of hysterical laughter and madness.

The Return (1931): Ten years later, Imhotep disguises himself as a wealthy, wrinkled, modern Egyptian gentleman named Ardeth Bey. He approaches Sir Joseph's son, Frank Whemple, and points the team directly toward the un-plundered tomb of Princess Anck-es-en-Amon. Once the archaeologists excavate her tomb and place her treasures on display in the Cairo Museum, Bey uses telepathic magic to summon her spirit.

The Reincarnation: Bey’s spell reaches Helen Grosvenor, a half-Egyptian woman who slips into a deep trance and travels straight to the museum. Bey recognizes her as the absolute reincarnation of his lost princess. However, occult expert Dr. Muller and Frank Whemple notice Helen's strange behavior and intervene, using a protective ancient amulet to shield her from Bey's psychic control.

The Climax: Determined to reunite eternally, Bey lures Helen back to the museum to kill her, mummify her body, and permanently revive her soul as his immortal bride. As he prepares the sacrifice, Helen suddenly remembers her past life and prays desperately to a statue of the goddess Isis. The statue raises its arm, casting a flash of divine light that sets the Scroll of Thoth on fire. Without the scroll's life-giving power, Imhotep rapidly ages and disintegrates into a harmless pile of dust.

Psychological Terror: Unlike Frankenstein, the monster here does not physically attack or chase victims. Instead, Imhotep utilizes hypnotic control, scrying pools, and distant telepathy to induce fatal heart attacks.

Groundbreaking Makeup: Makeup artist Jack Pierce spent eight tedious hours applying layers of cotton, collodion, and spirit gum to Boris Karloff's face to create the hyper-realistic, dry, wrinkled skin of the mummy.
