Brief Description  The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923) is a legendary American silent drama-horror film directed by Wallace Worsley and produced by Carl Laemmle and Irving Thalberg for Universal Pictures. Based on Victor Hugo’s classic 1831 novel, it stands as Universal's most successful silent film, famously elevating Lon Chaney to international super-stardom. The story is set in 1482 in Paris, France. Jehan Frollo (Brandon Hurst), the evil brother of the cathedral’s Archdeacon, seeks to stir up a peasant revolt against King Louis XI. At the same time, Jehan lusts after Esmeralda (Patsy Ruth Miller), a beautiful, compassionate Romani dancer.

Plot:
The Abduction & Rescue: Jehan commands the hideously deformed, deaf cathedral bell-ringer, Quasimodo (Lon Chaney), to kidnap Esmeralda. The attempt is thwarted by Captain Phoebus de Chateaupers (Norman Kerry), who rescues her, causing Esmeralda to fall deeply in love with him.

The Punishment: Quasimodo is captured and sentenced to be publicly whipped and chained in the town square. As he begs for water while being humiliated by the crowd, Esmeralda is the only one who takes pity on him, offering him a drink. This small act of pure kindness wins Quasimodo’s undying devotion and love.

The Frame-Up: Jehan, consumed by jealousy, stabs Phoebus. He frames Esmeralda for the attempted murder. She is tortured into a false confession and sentenced to hang at the gallows.

Sanctuary and Climax: As Esmeralda is led to the scaffold outside Notre Dame, Quasimodo courageously swings down on a rope, sweeps her into his arms, and carries her inside the cathedral, famously shouting "Sanctuary!". Under medieval law, she is safe from the authorities inside the church.

The Battle: Clashing forces descend upon the cathedral. Clopin, the King of the Beggars, leads an underworld mob to rescue Esmeralda (mistakenly believing she is in danger from the church), while the King's soldiers attack to seize her. Quasimodo single-handedly defends the cathedral by hurling massive stones and pouring torrents of molten lead from the towers onto the crowds below.

Tragic Ending: During the chaos, Jehan finds Esmeralda and tries to assault her. Quasimodo discovers them, realizes Jehan's true evil nature, and throws his former master off the cathedral towers to his death. However, Jehan manages to fatally stab Quasimodo before falling. Quasimodo dies peacefully next to the cathedral bells after seeing Esmeralda safely reunited with a surviving Phoebus.

The Sets: Universal dedicated 19 acres of its California backlot to meticulously reconstruct 15th-century Paris, including a towering, historically accurate facade of the Notre Dame Cathedral.

The Scale: Filming took over six months and utilized between 2,000 and 3,000 extras for the climactic riot scenes.
